| Program Overview |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The University of Regina's (UR) Faculty of Fine Arts offers baccalaureate programs in theatre, music, media production and studies and the visual arts, as well as four arts education programs and programs in First Nations art. Music The Department of Music offers Bachelor of Music (BMus), Bachelor of Music Education (BMusEd) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) programs. The BMus curriculum allows students to focus their studies on performance (vocal or instrumental), comprehensive music, composition or music history and integrates rigorous studio lessons in an academic framework. The BA in music is a liberal arts program that incorporates study in the humanities, sciences and social sciences with fundamental study and analysis of the history and theory of music. Students displaying a high level of academic achievement may enroll in the BA honours program, which promotes intense music education and encourages independent study in music composition or history. Theatre The Theatre Department offers BFA degrees in acting, design and stage management/technical theatre and traditional BA and BA honours programs. The BFA degrees are intended for those pursuing professional careers in their area of specialization. The department presents a number of productions each year; devoted to the classical/contemporary repertoire. These productions are the central focus of many courses and students are involved in many aspects of production work. BA students focus on dramatic theory and dramaturgy. All students complete a series of general liberal arts courses. The honours BA program allows students to pursue more advanced and independent study. Visual Arts The Department of Visual Arts delivers BA, honours BA and BFA programs. BA students must select a major in studio art or in art history. The BA in studio art balances coursework in art history and criticism with some specialization in studio art. Art history majors take art history courses covering a broad scope of historical periods and critical approaches, along with some studio courses. All BA students take complementary liberal arts electives. The BFA curriculum places a strong emphasis on studio practice in ceramics, drawing, intermedia, painting, printmaking or sculpture, culminating in a graduating exhibition at the Mackenzie Art Gallery. Close interaction with faculty is an integral part of this program. Media Production & Studies UR's Department of Media Production and Studies offers BA, BA honours and BFA programs; UR is the only university between Vancouver and Toronto to offer a BFA in film and video production. The BFA program delivers comprehensive instruction in scriptwriting, directing, recording, editing, sound and production for film and video as well as theoretical and historical studies. The BA and BA honours programs offer a broad education in media, film, and video studies, and provide opportunities for intersections with cultural studies and interdisciplinary studies in the Fine Arts and beyond. Indian Art UR is renowned for its unique BA and BFA programs in Indian art and BA in Indian Art History. The programs are offered through the First Nations University of Canada, the only university in Canada governed by First Nations people. Students learn aesthetics, art techniques, philosophies, art history and research in the theoretical practice of traditional and contemporary First Nations art and artists. Arts Education The Faculties of Fine Arts and Education offer arts education programs leading to two degrees: a Bachelor of Education (BEd) in arts education and a BA in Indian art, music, theatre or visual arts. A BA fine arts degree is also available to BMusEd students wishing to acquire a second degree. |
